ITINERARY

PIEDMONT, 1 night

Day 1 | BARBARESCO, BAROLO, GRINZANE CAVOUR

Arrival in Alba or Barolo and check in at your Hotel, in B&B treatment.

Full day tour with English speaking driver to Barbaresco, Neive, Barolo, Grinzane Cavour and the surrounding areas (Monforte D’Alba, Castiglione Falleto and Serralunga d’Alba). Wonderful wine tasting at a majestic wine cellar.

Barbaresco dates back to the Roman Empire. In that period the vines from which the village takes its name were already famous. This grape is obtained from the grape local cultivar Nebbiolo, but the wine is characterized by a lower volume of alcohol and is milder than Barolo. In the village there is also a castle with a 36 meter high tower directly over the Tanaro river. Neive, the most important center in the Tinella valley, is 12 kilometers away from Alba. It is a charming ancient village and has many culinary specialties, such as Piedmont meat and DOCG wines such as Moscato, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera.

Monforte, the name itself reveals the strategic function of the settlement (Monte = mountain, forte = strong), and over the centuries it was frequently besieged in the many conflicts between local lords and the town of Alba. Monforte’s castle was built in the eighteenth-century. Some of the most illustrious and world famous names in Italian winemakers have their wineries in the area around Monforte. The village of Castiglione is one of the most beautiful in the Alba area. The castle looks like a typical medieval fortress, with three towers and a great central courtyard. It is possible to visit the castle with permission and authorization of its owners. The church devoted to San Lorenzo is a sample of minimalist local architectural style. There is another church inside the old graveyard’s walls. In the village there is an old wine cellar named “Terre del Barolo”.

The town of Barolo lies at a lower level than La Morra. The road runs towards the district of Vergne along a ridge-back hill and then passes the ruins of the Volta Castle. Slightly further on a fork in the road there is a sign for the Barolo wine area. Famous vineyards lie both on the right and left hand, including some of the best known cru sites, such as Cerequio, Sarmassa, Cannubi, and Brunate. Houses cluster around the majestic castle that was once Marchesi Falletti’s home. The history of Barolo wine began here when the wife of Marchese Carlo Tancredi, the last of the Fallettis, asked the French enologist, Louis Oudart, to change the way wine was produced. The experiment was so successful that King Carlo Alberto himself asked the Marchesa for samples when he heard about it and subsequently bought the castle and estates of Verduno to produce Barolo wine for his own private use.

The unexpected experience: Florence’s oldest pharmacy. Founded in 1866 is located in Santa Maria Novella Convent. Many of the Officina’s preparations have made history and have marked an epoch: the essences, as well as the famous and much requested perfumes, are still prepared here following the formulas studied in 1500 for Caterina de’ Medici. Here they created the well-known Acqua di Colonia: it seems that it was the essence that Caterina de’ Medici, Queen of France, took with her to Paris, where it acquired the name of Eaude la Reine. Later on, the Italian alchemist Giovanni Paolo Feminis, who moved to Cologne in 1725, changed its name to Acqua di Colonia, as a tribute to the city where it was produced. It boasts a great collection of antique pharmacy jars. You will have the chance to visit the little medieval frescoed chapel which is normally closed to public. You can sit down and chat while enjoying an excellent glass of wine in front of a marvelous counter. Downstairs in the cellar there is a large room of about 300 sq. m. where the temperature and level of humidity are perfect for wine storage and where the clever distribution of lights allows you to admire over 2500 different types of wine. Here you will have the chance to have a special tasting of chocolates with Grappa, a well-known Italian spirit.
