PITIGLIANO & SOVANA: THE TUSCAN MAREMMA

PITIGLIANO & SOVANA: THE TUSCAN MAREMMA

The Maremma, in the southern part of Tuscany, defines a lifestyle based on respect for the environment, for culture and on maintaining traditions. It is a synonym for active experience, a magnificent voyage amidst colours, fragrances, history and seaside. It was once one of the most important Etruscan centres.

Our day in the Tuscan Maremma will start with a stop in Pitigliano. Located in a wild landscape, it is a beautiful town placed on a steep tufa rock where you can walk around or just have a coffee. Under the town houses there are plenty of caves dug right into the rock which today are used as perfect wine cellars. Pitigliano also has a Jewish history of great interest. For many centuries there has been an extraordinary large and important Jewish community that influenced the cultural life of the town together with the local population.

Enjoy a visit to the Jewish Ghetto of Pitigliano and get astonished by its Synagogue situated right into the heart of the ancient quarter. See the typical candelabrum, the decorations of the walls dating back to the 18th century and the writings in Hebrew which recount historical events of Pitigliano Jewish community.

After the visit of Pitigliano, we will arrive at a very nice and organic family farm. Here you will be welcomed by the nice owners, really proud to show you their farm!

The delicious home-made lunch will be enjoyed “AL FRESCO”, that is in their relaxing garden or inside their house in case of rain or bad weather.

After lunch, we will make a stop for a guided visit of Sovana.

Sovana -of Etruscan origins- was very important in the Middle Ages, when under the leadership of the powerful family Aldobrandeschi, it represented the good and the bad of a large part of the Maremma. Today it is a small rural village, but the precious Etruscan and Medieval monuments witness its illustrious history.
