Our day starts with a guided tour of Viterbo.
The Medieval part of Viterbo is known as one of the most beautiful and well preserved of Italy. Most of the antique monuments are built on basements that seem to have a much older origin. The Papal Palace is certainly one of the main attractions of the city. It was the second residence of the Popes after Rome, built to attract the Papacy outside the Roman walls. In the same square, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo built in Romanesque style on the top of Hercules’ Temple. Corso Italia –the main street- leads us to Via Verdi and to the famous Church of Santa Rosa that houses the tomb of the saint patron of the city. Every 3rd of September on the occasion of the feast of the saint a statue of 30 meters is carried on the inhabitants’ shoulders across the roads of the city.
Afterwards, we will have lunch in a very characteristic place: the Centro Botanico Moutan -home to the world´s largest collection of tree and herbaceous peonies. An authentic Italian style Garden Tour.
There, in the middle of peonies, climbing roses, American vines, acanthus bushes, water arums, hellebores and aromatic essences we will have the chance to taste a wonderful choice of tasty and typical dishes.
