Città della Pieve is a beautiful village on a hill between Umbria and Tuscany, in the centre of Italy.
The village was founded between the 7th and the 8th century A.C. around the Pieve (the church with baptismal functions) of Saints Gervasio and Protasio, as defensive body (the ancient "Castrum Plebis") of the Lombard Duches of Chiusi against the Papal and Byzantine Perugia. It is the hometown of Pietro Vannucci, also known as “Il Perugino”, an early Renaissance painter that left some great works of art to its town, as the wonderful “Adorazione dei Magi” painted in 1504.
Today Città della Pieve has a special charm: the Medieval urban structure is full of subsequent interventions of the following centuries, demonstrating the vitality of the city to the threshold of our days. It is situated in a territory rich of great products, such as wine, olive oil and the magnificent SAFFRON.
After having visited the city, we reach Palazzo Mazzuoli for a light lunch in the underground of the Palace. Alessandro, the owner, heir of a historic and important local family will explain you the wines’ characteristics and their production and if you want and time permits, will accompany you to visit the vineyards, olive groves and fields of saffron. From mid-October to mid-November, you can also participate to the harvest of the saffron flowers and to the next steps required to get the spice.
